Edx – Free Courses by Top Universities Around The World

The COVID-19 pandemic is here and I don’t think it will be going away anytime soon, I wanted to spend my time after work learning something useful instead of binge-watching Korean dramas. So I googled “top universities free online courses” and found Edx

Edx
There are more than 2500 free courses offered by top universities around the world.

I chose “Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies” because I have always wanted to become an entrepreneur.

Tarun Khanna talks about finding entrepreneurship in developing countries, mostly in India. He talks about institutional voids in developing countries with special emphasis on the healthcare sector.

He then talks about two cases of entrepreneurship that have sprung up in India.

One is Narayana Health City founded by cardiac surgeon Dr. Devi Shetty which does Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) operations for US$2000 or less. That is mind-blowing, for I know CABG operations normally costs S$10000 and more. He does this and more.

The other is Amul, an Indian diary cooperative society founded by Tribhuvandas Patel. Through interviews with Tribhuvandas Patel himself, I understood how this cooperative elevated many Indians out of poverty. Amul bought milk from independent farmers all over India. The collected milk are sent for processing and made into consumer products. Amul spurred India’s White Revolution, which made the country the world’s largest producer of milk and milk products.

He also discussed about the Kumbh Mela, a religious festival held in the northern Indian city of Allahabad every 12 years.

This course has given me a bigger perspective on entrepreneurship and how it can better a country.

The best part is, the course is free, with the option to pay some money to get a certificate.

If you have too much time and nothing to do, I encourage you to check out the courses on Edx. There are free courses from top universities such as Stanford, Harvard and Peking University.
